Casino was directed by Martin Scorsese and stars Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone, and Joe Pesci. The film is based on a book that was written by Nicholas Pileggi, and is the second film in Scorsese’s unofficial trilogy of Goodfellas, Casino, and The Wolf of Wall Street. The film tells the true story of Sam Rothstein, played by De Niro, as he is put in charge of managing a casino on the Vegas strip and all of the different scams that he is involved in. He gets involved with the mob because of his friend Nick, played by Joe Pesci, and has to deal with all of the strife that rises from that. He is also married to a woman who only married him because of the money, played by Sharon Stone.

The story is really compelling and interesting from beginning to end! The film is almost exactly three hours long, but for a film with that run-time I think it was consistently very good and only lagged a little bit. I loved how the film is basically one massive hustle that everyone is doing to other people, it raised the stakes higher and I really liked it! I don’t want to give away too much of the story because I didn’t really know a lot about it going into it but I really enjoyed it! I did feel the run time, but I never really lost interest in the story it was just really long and I didn’t really allot my time well enough.
I think the film fits in with Goodfellas and with The Wolf of Wall Street really well, it almost felt like as if the two films were combined into this story and I thought it was really well done. That being said, I also feel like the film doesn’t really know what it wants to be, it just kind of feels less believable than the other two films. That doesn’t really make sense because this film is the most believable but it just felt like it took the good aspects from the other films, toned them down, and made them less interesting. I still like this film but it is definitely not as good as the other two.
The actors are all really fantastic! De Niro is really great and this is the best performance that I have ever seen from him, even in Goodfellas. He did a great job of being a semi-decent person in the world of bad people that he lived in and I really liked him! His character was kind of inconsistent sometimes, but I only noticed it a few times. Sharon Stone is also really phenomenal, although I don’t really understand her character’s relationship with Sam. He knows that she is only married to him for the money, but he still trusts her literally with his life and livelihood. His character has been built up to be this super careful guy who needs to have everything go perfectly but he is being very unwise in his decision making where she is involved. I know that he is blinded by her beauty and his love for her but it still just feels uncharacteristic.
Joe Pesci is good, he plays Joe Pesci and doesn’t really do anything with it, he’s fun and over the top and cracks some jokes once or twice but he just doesn’t feel like a character. I know that he was typecast as this character in a lot of films, but even in Goodfellas he made the character his own, but in this film he didn’t do anything amazingly. James Woods is in this film, I have never seen him in anything except Family Guy but he is actually awesome in this! He isn’t in it a ton and he was a terrible person but he was funny and I thought his performance was really great!
The camerawork was also really impressive! It is shot in Scorsese’s signature long following or tracking shot style, but it didn’t feel as unique or well done as his other films. It was not bad at all, and I would say that it is actually quite well done but it just wasn’t as good as his other films. I really loved the shots in the casino, it blended really well with the music and enveloped me in the film! The music is really phenomenal as well! I really loved the song choices and I think it worked perfectly and felt like music that would be played at a casino. I do think that some songs were overused and I’m pretty sure that I heard Gimme Shelter by the Rolling Stones at least 3 times in the film.
The production design and locations were all really cool and well done, everything felt very real and grounded and I appreciated that. I really liked this film and I think if you like mobster movies, or Scorsese’s films in general this is a must watch. I think I had really high expectations and it just didn’t meet all of them, but I still really enjoyed the film and I will give Casino an 8 out of 10.
